Principles of Oral Health Education & Promotion
Scientific principles underpinning oral health education and promotion; the relationship between oral and general health; prevention of oral disease; and planning oral health promotion for individuals and different groups.
Oral Disease: Aetiology, Pathogenesis & Risk Factors
Causes and development of oral disease, including plaque and calculus, dental caries, gingivitis, periodontitis and acute ulcerative gingivitis, together with relevant risk factors and preventive approaches
Other Oral Conditions & Oral Pathology
Recognition and understanding of common oral conditions, including non-carious tooth surface loss, candidiasis and angular cheilitis, alongside awareness of oral pathology and the need for appropriate referral.
Diet, Nutrition & Oral Health
The relationship between diet, nutrition and oral health; the role of sugars in dental caries; acidic foods and drinks in tooth surface loss; dietary assessment; and delivery of appropriate evidence-based dietary advice.
Plaque Control & Oral Hygiene
Principles of effective plaque control, toothbrushing and interdental cleaning, selection and use of oral hygiene aids and products, and adapting advice to the individual patient’s needs and abilities.
